The cost of living in Germany is relatively much cheaper when compared to other European countries and is around €350- 500/month or US$ 437.83-625.48/month.

A picture of the cost of living will roughly cover the following components:

  1. Housing/month: € 180 – 250 (or US$ 225.17-312.74)
  2. Daily meals: € 70 – 100 (or US$ 87.57-125.09)
  3. Health insurance: € 50 – 60 (or US$  62.55-75.06)
  4. Transportation : € 0 – 20 (or US$ 0-25.02)
  5. Phone/mobile: € 30 – 50 (or US$ 37.53- 62.55)
  6. Entertainment: € 10 – 20 (or US$ 12.51-25.02)
  7. Reserves: € 10 – 20 (or US$ 12.51-25.02)

The above costs of living has been determined assuming the student is single with normal living standards and cooking habits. It is also based upon the assumption that the students will be washing and cleaning their own homes, and willing to share a room (two to five people).

Is It Possible To Work During Study In Germany?

YES! Because foreign students who study in Germany are entitled to work for a maximum of 90 days/year.

Possible job opportunities are as follows:

  1. Part-time on campus jobs such as maintaining a library, attending in a cafeteria, or working in a laboratory. The hours for part time work on campus are up to 20 hours/week which means about 3 hours/day during the school term and the income earned from part-time on campus work is around €200-400/month or US$ 250.19-500.38/month.
  2. In addition to part-time on campus jobs, students also have the opportunity to intern within industries in accordance with their majors taken. The working period for this type of internship is for at least two semesters during the study period and can be completed after the first year of study. Income earned from this internship is around €200 – 1000/month or US$ 250.19-1250.95/month. A list of industries that can be applied to as a student intern are located at Benz, Lufthansa, Airbus, Porsche, Boeing, and BMW corporations.
  3. Other job opportunities are for casual/summer work (holiday season) at restaurants, cafes, companies or  factories. These opportunities are usually accessed by students who want to get extra money during holiday seasons because Germans tend to take time off for vacations abroad with their families during that time. The work previously done by Germans is often replaced temporarily by the students. For this kind of work, students are only allowed to work up to 40 hours/week and the work can usually be done for 3 months. Income from casual jobs is around €500-1500/month or US$ 625.48-1876.42/month.
