Plan Your Money with Allah in Mind

So many of us leave Allah behind when it comes to money. So many of us plan our financial life with so little references to Al-Qur’an or so little consideration on what is the best way according to Islam in managing wealth. Along the way, we see that our financial life doesn’t go as we wanted. And then we ask why? We wonder what we did wrong. Did we miss something? Indeed, we missed a lot of thing. Most importantly, we didn’t plan our financial life with Allah in mind. We plan our money without Allah.

So how is it to plan our financial life with Allah? Every single day, at least 17 times that we surrender to Allah through prayer. We confess that in prayer, deeds, life and death is only for the glory of Allah. But then, after the prayer is done, we turn around, grab our purse and checkbook, hit the door and leave Allah behind. We go and about our daily life, with little regard and consciousness whether what we do financially is already conform to Allah’s will or not.

So, is the practice of managing wealth according to Islamic guidance defined only by using Islamic investment products? Is it enough to be more Islamic in our financial life? Just do the business as usual and put one or two Islamic investment products in our portfolio and Voila! It became more Islamic! Well, not that simple.

What is the essence of planning our financial life in Islamic way? The essence is that we accept, with mind, heart, soul, deeds and consciousness that the money, wealth and possession that we have in our hand is belong to Allah. Every single piece of our wealth belong to Allah; all of them.  We are so used to think and act that the wealth we have in our hand is belong to us. In Islam, it is clear that everything belongs to Allah. This is the most essential concept that change our mindset from “these are mine” to “All belong to Allah”

The change of the mindset from “these are mine “ to “ all belong to Allah” will change the way we view our wealth.  It will shift the intention from fulfilling our endless wants to use the wealth to please Allah.  This intention shift will impact the planning that we make, the priorities that we set and decisions in managing the wealth and our financial life. We will automatically put Allah back in our financial life.

Our intention defines the value of our deeds. And for a Muslim, our role in this world is none other than to please Allah. To seek Allah’s blessing. Our goal is to gain the benefit in this world, and in the hereafter.  To truly realize who is the Ultimate Owner of the wealth in our hand is the first, most essential requirement to manage, plan and make decision in our financial life. It is the shift of mindset to put Allah first, only Allah, for Allah and forever Allah in our daily life, including in managing our money.
