aMuslima Inspiring Action Phase 1 in Mangunsoko

On May 20th, 2016, aMuslima  launched an Inspiring Action program called: “Support Ramadan in Kedungsari and Mangunsoko.” The goal of this program was to sell packages that would provide basic food necessities for needy families or to provide fun packs for underprivileged kids during Ramadan and pre-Eid celebrations.

*Mangunsoko is a village (area) at the slopes of Merapi volcano in Magelang (Central Java) and Kedungsari is in Kulonprogo, Yogyakarta (Island of Java), Indonesia.

As all the Mangunsoko volunteers live far from the Mangunsoko Merapi area and we wanted to make sure no one had left for the Eid celebrations, so we decided to distribute the packages earlier than what we initially scheduled.  So we did! It happened on  June 19, 2016.

aMuslima team – thanks to all that bought packages from around the world!  Were able to purchase 80 care food packages for families and 50 fun kid packages which met the village’s proposed needs. However in reality, due to the price difference of foodstuffs and bulk discounts,  we actually  fulfilled  a total of 84 care food packages. Funds collected from the donor to Mangunsoko was Rp 27.500.000 (US$ 2061.86) and used for shopping staple goods, packing in cardboard boxes, writing tools, operating costs for the volunteers, as well as aMuslima’s operational costs.

The Timeline:

Activities for this first phase began on June 17 with basic needs shopping in the nearby city of Solo. While the ready food package from Laziz! Food and Anjana stationery package were sent and pooled in Solo as courier might not be able to reach the Merapi location. Furthermore, the volunteers headed by Ustadz Ayat along with 3 other young cleric, departed carrying the supplies and stationeries to the slopes of Merapi on June 18 evening.

To save space in the vehicle, the packaging of foodstuffs needed to be done at the Headquarters Da’wah Merapi and coordinated with Ustadz Dzulqornain one of coordinators Da’wah Merapi. Packing took place that night until 1:23 am prior to suhur time.

Distribution in Mangunsoko

Food packages consisted of cooking oil, 3 biscuits packs, wheat flour, soy sauce, coffee, tea, margarine, salt, sugar, sweetened condensed milk, halal gelatine powder, dry noodles, biscuit tins, ready to eat  Laziz chicken package. While stationery consists of reusable plastic bags, notebooks and notepads product of Anjana, pencils, a pencil case, an eraser, a sharpener,  a ruler and stickers.

On June 19, 2016, they started to distribute the food packages to 14 Muslims at Al Huda Mosque, Balong Hamlet ba’da tausiyah Fajr prayer in congregation. Around 10 am, the distribution of food packages and stationery proceeded to Muslim citizens and underprivileged children. The distribution was focused at some points as in mosques and the ustadz took opportunity to give a short preaching to local residents.

However, not all packages could be distributed to the eligible on that day because some were unable to attend.  “There are some people who could not attend because they had to go to the fields … and even children are also helping their fathers to the fields … so we dropped off to ustadzs who served in the region..” said Ustadz Ayat.

Alhamdulillah the first phase distribution has run smoothly. Phase 2 distribution to Kedungsari in shaa Allah will be on June 26 with more packages to go. Mangunsoko residents, aMuslima team and sponsors thank to all the donors. May this support can be an ongoing charity that has no breaks and can increase the scales of goodness in the Hereafter. Aamiin.
