Are Cakes or Tarts Containing Rhum Halal?

Currently many cakes or tarts contain rhum.  It can be identified from its taste and smell. There is a reader who sent a question to me, whether tart containing rhum is halal?  Can rhum containing alcohol (khamr) be removed by heating, so the cake is not wasted?

There are many khamr explanations in the Islamic law. Criteria whether it is intoxicating or not is used to determine whether something is categorised as khamr or not. If it is categorised khamr then it will apply the following laws:

  1. Khamr should not be used in any form. It is based on the hadith which forbid khamr used to make vinegar, as body warmers, medicine, even to be traded to the Jews. Similarly hadith explains that there are 10 people / person who will be damned in khamr issue. This shows that khamr should not be used for anything, including taking advantage of it.
  2. Khamr should not be used to make food or drink because the food and drink containing khamr will be haram. It is based on the rule if haram and halal are mixed (evenly or homogeneously), then it is haram. This regulation is according to the hadith which describes the rat gnawed cheese. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “If it is hard cheeses, throw the mouse and cheese around it, and eat the remaining cheese. If the cheese is molten, then pour it. “(Hadith Narrated by Bukhari, Ahmad, and Nasa’i from Maimunah, the prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) wife).
  3. If in the big quantity (normal quantity) is intoxicating then in even a drop quantity is also haram. Khamr should not be used for anything else. Rhum is included in the group of khamr, very intoxicating with alcohol content over 37%!

Therefore, tarts or cakes containing rhum is haram. If rhum is mixed in a tart /cake, it is impossible to be removed altogether. There will always be traces of rhum in it. The tart or pie containing rhum is haram whether you remove (which is impossible to remove all) the rhum or not.

May this information be useful to you.

Ameen.
