Book Review: The Death Of A Beautiful Dream

The Death of a Beautiful Dream is a moving collection of poetry written by Saira Anwar and covers a variety of themes including those of love, marriage, betrayal, friendship and family relationships.

The poems are narrated in a flowing chronology that takes the reader through the author’s experiences – from the initial stirrings of new-found love to the disappointment of that love gone sour then along the journey of healing and renewed hope. Ranging from poems of serene bliss to ones of tragic heartbreak, I was touched by the author’s honest depictions of what she went through and recommend this book to anyone looking for an expressive read.

Published in January of 2014, the author, Saira Anwar, hopes that The Death Of A Beautiful Dream will inspire readers to gain strength, courage and hope from the book. She focuses on connecting with the readers by sharing her experiences and her aim is to bring about “a birth of a beautiful dream” for those who read the book by dissecting the death of the beautiful dream that she once hoped for.Death Of A Beautiful Dream

Islam plays a large role in her writing. She shares, “It connects me to Allah (SWT) and to Him am I ever so grateful for giving me this [Islam] to begin with.”

She has been writing poetry for over two years and was inspired to write The Death Of A Beautiful Dream after a life-altering experience. After marrying, she took a trip to another country to live with her husband but the marriage didn’t work out. Depressed and traumatized by the experience, poetry became an outlet and a therapeutic practice towards healing.

She writes about the experience and says, “”We have to remember that anything can happen in life but what matters is how we deal with it. We cannot always get what we want; sometimes what we ‘think’ is good for us, may in fact be the opposite.”

With the encouragement of her brother, family and friends, she released her own poetry book and her passionate desire to prevent others from making the same mistakes is what fueled her writing. This is what led her to select the title The Death of a Beautiful Dream.

One of the striking lines of poetry from the book that touched me is from her poem entitled Women where she writes:

“We are like a surface of glass, the more you wipe us gently, the more we will shine like diamonds . . .”
