Determine Your College Program Of Interest In Just 5 Steps!

Which do you prefer?

If you are students, especially high school students who will be entering into Universities, you may often feel confused about which courses to take for furthering your education. Unfortunately, many students realize too late that the courses that they have selected do not match their majors, are very difficult, too boring, or less challenging than expected. As a result, students sometimes finish school reluctantly, move to different program of study during the next academic year, or, occasionally, become unwilling to continue their studies.

Instead of wasting your time, energy, and money –which is not small – you should first carefully determine what courses you will select.

Here are 5 steps you can take before you submit an application to a University:

  1. Find your strengths and weaknesses. You can often feel it while studying in high school if you prefer a particular lesson over another. Maybe something that has a lot of calculations rather than memorization? Or is it the opposite? Look at the scores in your report cards for the last 2 years and if the scores in your Math classes are better than the scores of Geography or History, maybe you are strong in courses that contain a lot of calculations. When you love Biology or Chemistry more than Economics or History, maybe you tend to lean towards a science major than one in social studies.
  2. Select a field of study that interests you. Once you know your advantages and disadvantages, determine the majors that you will take. Select more than one department to expand your opportunities for being accepted at several universities.
  3. Learn if the department selected really suits you and your future career. Survey the websites from several universities in the country that you’ve selected and discover what areas of study will be covered. Find out how many subjects must be completed, the average length of study, and what the requirements are for being accepted into the school. You should also know what the minimum score requirements are for each course of study (if high scores are necessary) in order to make sure that you fit the criteria. Also, know how much it will cost.
  4. Discuss your decision with many people. Talk to friends who are taking the same/similar courses or who are attending the same university. Email the universities that you are interested in to acquire as much information as you need.
  5. Learn which universities are the best for the courses selected and measure your ability. Survey the school quality, environment for Muslims, the school rank, etc. when you have determined your major and university. Also, be sure to visit the school you’ve selected or to request a copy of a guidebook/prospectus to the University.
