Celebrating Eid Al-Adha in the USA

Eid al Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, is the Muslim holiday which commemorates the obedience of the prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him, who was willing to sacrifice his son when ordered to by God. Eid al Adha is observed in the U.S. much like it is in many other countries around the world with congregational prayers and the sacrifice of a lamb or goat for eating and sharing of the meat with those who cannot afford to sacrifice an animal themselves. In addition to congregational prayers, many Muslim families also hold gatherings for friends and neighbors where people celebrate the holiday by eating meals together and exchanging gifts with one another. Our family often prepares a large meal for family and friends and we enjoy spending the entire day together. We make salaat together and give gifts then end the night by watching a movie at home with everyone.Eid al Adha 2014

In addition to family gatherings, local mosques and Muslim organizations often coordinate Eid picnics and Eid Fairs for families and children where kids can play games, have their faces painted and enjoy rides on small animals like ponies or amusement park rides like merry-go-rounds. The 2014 Eid Fest will be held in the Greater Houston, TX area this year to commemorate Eid Al Adha and will feature the sounds of Native Deen, the trio who fuses Hip-hop and R&B flavors to create unique combinations of lyrics, rhythms and sounds, and the comedic talents of Preacher Moss, known as the founder of “Allah Made Me Funny”- The Official Muslim Comedy Tour. Eid Fest 2014 is free and open to the public and starts promptly at 4pm in the Sugar Land Town Square.
