Eid ul Adha for My Daughter

Alhamdullilah, my daughter turned 6 in June.  As she grows, my husband and I are all the more concerned about her Islamic upbringing. This concern is stronger now that she’s attending an International school where Islamic studies is regrettably not part of the curriculum. This may appear odd considering we reside in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. We had talked about the choice of school before, while  it was very tempting to enroll her in a “local” international school..run by Arabs but following US/UK or canadian syllabus. These schools offer Arabic and Islamic studies. But we are not sure how long we would be in the country and wanted reassurance of “quality” standardised education. Singapore after all has such high standard of education and we did not want her to lag too far behind should we have to uproot and return.

Thankfully we found a Quran teacher for her last year. And this summer vacation, I enrolled her in a Madrasah for 6 weeks when we were back in Singapore. But what are we to do for the 10 months we are in Jeddah? Yes, of course I read to her stories of the Prophet, discuss Allah and the rituals that we perform. She has been taught dua’s to recite before eating, to recite AlFatiha and 3 Quls before sleeping. BUT kids learn best when they are playing, having fun and with their friends.

Hence we a couple of equally concerned mums,  are planning an Eid vacation activity with a difference. A short 3 day”workshop” on Hajj for the kids. We need them to understand its not just another break from school. InsyaAllah we hope to increase their awareness of Hajj, its historic significance. Briefly let me share our ideas with you. Over the 3 days the children will InsyaAllah be exposed to the Hajj rites. They will don Ihram, build a Ka’abah, role play sai’e, camp as per the hujjaj in Arafah and Mina , stone Shaytaan at Jamraat and symbolically “slaughter” a toy sheep. They will be told stories of Ibrahim as building the Ka’abah with Ismail, Allah’s command to sacrifice Ismail, Siti Hajar’s search for water for baby Ismail. Through these activities and stories we hope to teach them Islamic concepts of obedience to Allah, faith in Allah, unity as Muslims, equality. These are our humble objectives.

To this end let me share the links to some sites that we have benefitted from:

islamicbulletinboards.com

amuslimchildisborn.blogspot

ummabdulbasir.wordpress.com

MuslimKidsGenius(on FB)

This will also be a launching pad for teaching them solat and other Islamic topics.

InsyaAllah I will post pics of the activities.
