Entrepreneurial Spirit for Children You Can Be Proud Of

Lately my children have enjoyed making crafts. They’ve used colorful corrugated papers (kokoru) to make trinkets like refrigerator magnets, key-chains, accessories for a pencils and more. They were very enthusiastic about crafting activities but over time they didn’t know what to do with all of their creations. There was a lot! If we stored all of the crafts at home then it became rubbish, and there was no more space inside of their bedrooms. As a result, their crafts were everywhere!

Finally, they discussed everything and decided to sell their works. They offered their crafts to their school friends and the aims were not only to get some money, but to sell their creations as a way of educating them on how hard it is to gain a little cash. Selling their crafts has also taught them to be more creative, how to manage their emotions, and it has built their confidence.

Their classmates were very enthusiastic on the first day that they marketed their crafts especially because not many friends knew how to craft themselves. My children proudly revealed the money that they had earned to me, and they were passionate to make it again and again.

Week after week, one week, two weeks, until a month had passed and their school friends started to make their own works. Al-Hamdulillah, my children were not disappointed when this began to happen because they felt that they had inspired their friends to be more creative. They were proud to have introduced inventiveness in their school environment.

After a month of selling, we calculated the ‘income’ together and divided the money between each of the children as reward for their work. I reminded them to take a portion of their money for zakat to ensure that my children would understand that a percentage of what they earned belongs to the needy and should be distributed through charity. Al-Hamdulillah, my children understood and did not become greedy to have all of the money.

QS Ibrahim 14:7

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.
