A women’s hair is said to be her crowning glory. Normal hair loss occurs daily, but in amounts that we are not aware of. As we age, however, our hair thins. Anyone, men, women, young or old, can experience hair loss (alopecia). It can be hereditary or due to hormonal changes (like pregnancy, childbirth, discontinuation of birth control pills, or menopause), medications (from treatment of cancer, arthritis, depression, or heart problems) or medical conditions (such as thyroid problems, scalp infections, and other skin disorders). Hair growth is dynamic, hence, any disturbance to the cycle can affect its growth.

Many women with hair loss suffer in silence, altering their hairstyle to hide thinning or patches. As many as 5% of women under 30, and 60% of those older than 70 are affected. The earlier treatment is sought, the better the outcome.

The most common form of Female Hair Loss is Androgenetic Alopecia, which has a strong genetic component and can be inherited from either the mother or father. This type of hair loss can start as early as the late teens and the earlier it starts, the more severe the hair loss tends to be.

Unlike men, most women with patterns of hair loss don’t get a receding hairline or bald spots on the top of the scalp as is common in men. Instead, there is visible thinning over the crown. Women also experience a shortened growth cycle and develop wispy hairs. The first noticeable sign is the widening of a part or a smaller ponytail.

Treatment Options:

  1. Minoxidil (Regaine)- is an over the counter liquid or foam, available in a 2% or 5% solution, that is rubbed onto the scalp twice daily to grow hair and prevent further loss. Some people experience some hair regrowth or a lower rate of hair loss or both. It can take 12 weeks for new hair to start growing and side effects may include scalp irritation, and occasionally unwanted hair growth on adjacent skin of the forehead or face.
  2. Eat a well balanced diet, rich in proteins, iron.
  3. Avoid pulling your hair tight into a bun or tail.
  4. Keep your hair short.
  5. Reduce stress
