Introduction to our seasonal food series

Sallam!

As we are now able to get and eat our traditional foods anytime and anywhere our demands have increased global trade activity.  Not that this is a bad thing but…have we ever thought about where and how our favorite fruits, vegetables, meats, etc .. are always available in our local grocery store? Did you know that apples and pears are not always in season in North America? And so, when we go to our local supermarket on an off season our apple didn’t come from North America but from South America instead?  This effort has created a wonderful global marketplace but it has also created imbalance and stress on our planet.  How so?  Well, shipping a cargo full of banana’s to from South America to North America not only costs more but this means the petrol used in the boats or plans and trucks to get those banana’s to you have added to the polluted air and strain on these markets forced to produce more than its local capacity.  Naturally we don’t give a second thought on where our goods come from however, we should start!  By using local and seasonal foods it allows the direct producer to earn more money – less of their profit goes to the shipping companies, middle men, etc.  And by consuming local goods also allows for less gas / energy emission = planet friendly!  So, as part of growing our Iman and Taqwa we should learn to live on the land we are currently on.  So, stand by … every Saturday for a look at what is seasonal in your part of the world and some recipes to cook what we harvested that week.  I encourage sisters from around the world to contribute notes on seasonal foods in their local area so that we may all share this wonderful knowledge.
