It’s My First Day!

At eight o’clock in the morning I was getting ready to take my little girl to school. It was the very first day of school in her life. She is only slightly more than two years old but I am determined to send her school. I want her to socialize with her peers, obtain new knowledge and be more independent, that’s all!

I showered and dressed her in her best. I prepared her lunch of biscuits and fruit pieces, in hopes she would enjoy her food during the school recess. I also slipped a change of clothing and diapers into her tiny bag.

Arriving at the school, some children were already in the small school building. They looked older and bigger than my daughter. I carried her into the classroom. I had intended to sit with her to play for a while because this was her first day of school and I wanted to ease her transition into the new environment. But the rules in the school are strict. Parents are not allowed to wait in the classroom when the lessons have begun, period!

My daughter was taken and carried by one of the assistant teachers, she told me to leave the classroom. My beloved little one thrashing, crying as hard as she could, calling me, “Mom .. Mom .. Mooom ..” But overpowered, her thin small body could not break away from the teacher’s arms. .. My heart shattered….. I steeled myself to leave her and I told her teacher that I would pick her up in an hour, not more …

An hour spent outside the school at a cafe nearby, my heart was broken. ‘What was she doing in the building there? Would she cry until her voice was gone and stop only when I pick her up? Was my decision to send her to school at this early age right?…… But… this is the best for her, rather than being at home watching TV and video continuously, which is not good for her eyes and brain. ….and later she will not develop the necessary life and cognitive skills, cannot get along with many friends…. ‘ and so on were all forms of blame and justification for my decision.

I could not wait for the hour to be up to pick up my daughter. Actually the school session is three hours long. Heeee…. let me make my own rules. I stood in front of her classroom door. The door was ajar so I could peep in to spot her. Aahh… she was being held by one of the assistant teachers.

She does not want to eat, drink, and does not want to get out of my lap“, the teacher reported. She had just stopped crying, probably from fatigue and exhaustion. I saw her eyes were slightly swollen because of too much crying, her face was red (I am still lucky it had not turned blue… heeee…). Once reunited with me, she immediately went on crying again and calling out for me again as if we had been separated for a year!

Mommy is here sweetheart, do not worry that Mom would not pick you up“, I kissed her cheek and stroked her hair.

Today, after five days of school, her crying has ceased. She likes to play with the toys in her classroom, wants to eat her lunch, and follow the school’s activities. I believe she just needed some time to adjust to the new environment.
