Lasagna done right!

 

Uh. I know. Right?

Okay it’s Labor Day Weekend this coming weekend.  Totally time to store up on some home cooked amazing food.  Finish off the summer strong with friends, family, and totally chillin!

From the aMuslima Kitchen we bring to your table: Lasagna.

This is my own recipe.  I like it better than the average Lasagna, not only because it’s Halal but it has a fresher and lighter taste that doesn’t leave you feeling ‘bogged’ down.  Enjoy!

Ingredients:

Lasagna pasta – dry (ones that you can place instantly in pan OR ones that you need to pre-boil, both are fine)

Ground beef – 1lb

Crushed Tomatoes (from a can is fine) – 1 medium – large can.

Tomato paste  1 can

Ground onions / or finely minced onions – 1 large.

2 bunches of cilantro finely chopped

1 tsp Oregano to garnish.

2 cups of Mozerella Cheese

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp: Salt, Pepper, Paprika, sugar

Bechamel Sauce:

  • 1 – 1 1/2 cup flour  (if you want more sauce, add more flour and milk)
  • 1 stick of butter
  • 1 1/2 cup milk
  • pinch of: salt, pepper & nutmeg

 

How to:

Meat Mixture:

Saute Onion in olive oil 3 tbsp  along with ground beef as it browns add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, ingredients (see above) and simmer.  In about 5 minutes of simmering add: cilantro.  Cook until mixture is glossy.

Bechamel sauce – this is the white creamy sauce to layer onto the lasagna.

You will need a whisk for this.

Melt butter in pot – LOW HEAT.  As butter is melting add flour into melting butter mixture, start beating this mixture with your whisk.  And as you are beating, add the milk and keep beating this mixture over the low heat until it becomes smooth and thick.  This will remind you of creamy mac and cheese.  Add ingredients. and take off heat.  **If mixture hardens up don’t worry, just add more milk and re-beat the mixture.

Pasta.

If you are using instant pasta (no need to pre boil – make your bechamel sauce slightly watery) but if pre-boiling pasta make the bechamel creamy and thick.

Assembling the Lasagna!

Then start layering ingredients in this order:

  1. pasta
  2. meat + cheese
  3. pasta
  4. bechamel sauce
  5. repeat this and end with the Bechamel sauce on the top.
  6. Sprinkle mozerella, parmesan cheese (just a little), and oregano.

Put in oven at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes or until bubbly. Serve hot!
