Marriage is not an easy thing, because being married means that we are also married to our husbands’ family. Our husbands’ parents become our parents, while any differences are treated as colours or flavours adding to our marriage journeys.
Dear Muslimah, we need to realize that our partner may have been raised with a different understanding of Islam from our own, from that of our families, and he may have different habits, rules, and tradition. If we are not wise at addressing the differences, it can be difficult to have a happy family.
If we in fact follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW)’s life with his wives, in shaa Allah we can create a lifelong, harmonious family circle that will last until the end of life.
How was Rasulullah (SAW)’s married life?
The Prophet (SAW) was very tender to his wives, as evidenced by the following acts he did during his lifetime.
- Prophet Muhammad (SAW) had asked his wife to watch the young Ethiopians folk dance show.
- He once invited Aishah (RA) to dessert and they raced together. The first race Aishah (RA) won because at that time her body was still slim and she was young, but when Aishah started to gain more weight, when she raced along the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) at another time, the Prophet (SAW) won the match.
- The Prophet (SAW) said, one would be rewarded for anything that he does seeking the pleasure of Allah (SWT), even for the food that he puts in the mouth of his wife.
- The Prophet (SAW) used to extend his knee to his wife to assist her up to ride the camel.
- He performed the night prayer together.
- The Prophet (SAW) always continued good relations with the families of Khadija, even after Khadija died, and he often slaughtered meat then sent it to Khadija’s family and friends.
In the hadiths it is also mentioned that:
“The best of you are those who are best to their wives.”
How romantic was Rasulullah married life! We can take those good examples and follow them for keeping our marriages in the best condition eternally and always, with Allah’s (SWT) blessing. Aamiin.
