Prayer #18: Taslim (Salam)

Each prayer always ends with the salutation and turning to the right and saying “assalamu’alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barokaatuh,” then turning to the left while saying, “assalamu’alaikum wa rahmatullaah.”

1. Narrated Wail bin Hujr, Radhiyallahu Anhu: I prayed with the Prophet, Sallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam, and he would finish the prayer saying taslim to his right and saying,

السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ

Assalamu’alaikum warohmatullaahi wa barokaatuh

“Peace be upon you and the mercy and blessings of Allah,”  (and to his left side (saying)

السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ

Assalamu’alaikum warrohmatullaah

“Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah.” (Abu Dawud: 997)

2. Abdullah bin Masud, Radhiyallahu Anhu, reported that when Allah’s Messenger, Sallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam, said taslim (to conclude the prayer turning his face towards the right side) he uttered,

السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ

“Assalamu’alaikum warohmatullaah”

“Peace be upon you and the Mercy of Allah” and the whiteness of his right cheek could be seen (and as he turned his face) towards the left and uttered:

السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ

“Assalamu’alaikum warohmatullaah”

“Peace be upon you and the Mercy of Allah” and the whiteness of his left cheek could be seen. (Abu Dawud: 996, Nasa’i and Tirmidhi: 295).
