Prayer #8: Read Ta’awwudz

The Prophet, Sallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam, used to recite ta’awwudz which reads:

A’uudzubillaahi minasy syaithoonirrojiimi min hamzihi wa nafkhihi wa naftsihi

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil, from madness, from pride, and from his disgraceful verse. (Abu Dawud, Ibnu Majah, Daraquthni, Hakim, and is legalized by him and by Ibnu Hibban and Dzahabi)

Sometimes the Prophet, Sallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam, added a sentence reading:

A’uudzubillaahis samii’il ‘aliim minasy syaithooni…

I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing, All-Knowing of the devil ….(Abu Dawud and Tirmidzi with sanad hasan)

After that he read:

Bismillaahirrohmaanirrohiim

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, Most Merciful, in a low voice. (Bukhari, Muslim, Abu ‘Awanah, Thahawi, and Ahmad).

Anas, Radhiyallahu Anhu, reported that Allah’s Apostle, Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, Abu Bakr and Umar (RA) used to commence prayer with these words:

Alhamdulillaahi robbil ‘aalamiin

Praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds (Bukhari: 243; Muslim: 399)

He further reported that they would not recite:

Bismillaahirrohmaanirrohiim either in the beginning of the recitation or at the end of the recitation (of Al-Fatiha) in audible voice (Muslim: 399).

That’s why we do not hear the priest say bismillaahirrohmaanirrohiim when reading Al-Fatihah, for the Prophet, Sallallahu ‘Alaihi Wassalam, said it in a low voice.
