Tips For Sending Children To Study Abroad – Part 1

Bismillahirrahmanirrahiim

Praise be to Allah.

Days are passing us by like water through the palms of our hands. Next year, In Shaa Allah, my son will graduate from the university. I clearly remember when he decided to study abroad. As parents, we want our kids to have the best education. That doesn’t mean that a university outside of our country is better, but if there is a chance to study abroad, why not take it? Last year my other son decided to study abroad too.

It may be hard to let them go when sending our children abroad and trusting that they will be fine so far away from their family. For this reason, after my children decided to study abroad, we sat together and discussed everything about studying abroad.

Studying abroad poses many questions for our children and for parents as well. A lot of these questions can cause serious stress and anxiety. Here are a few tips to get you through this exciting, and sometimes overwhelming time. It’s best to prepare everything related to going to school abroad before you send our children.DSCF1540

  • First of all, ask Allah (SWT) for the best decision before we make it. “Du’a is a weapon of a believer, a pillar of religion, and a light of the heavens and the earth.” (Narrated by Al-Hakim).  The power of du’a is mighty indeed as the Prophet Shalallahu ‘alayhi wasallam said, “Nothing can avert the decree of Allah except supplication…” (Narrated by Tirmidhi).
  • Research the destination country, including its history, culture, customs, laws, social/moral codes, dress and language. Read all of the program literature and any available student accounts of studying abroad. Never hesitate to ask questions to the advisor or even to a program administrator.
  • Let your children live in a university dorm during first year. If your financial circumstances do not include enough for a private room, maybe you can find room with roommates, but a private room is better for the child’s convenience.
  • Talk with parents whose children have previously studied abroad and listen to their experiences and advice.
  • Be a guide and support your child by giving him or her the information and resources that he or she needs to make informed decisions.
  • Keeping in touch with your child while he or she is studying overseas is important for both of you.
