The Quba’ Mosque

When the Prophet (SAW) migrated to Madinah, he rested at Quba’ (a village near Al Madinah which has now has become one of its districts), at the house of Kulthum bin Al-Hadm of the tribe of Banu ‘Amr bin’ Awf. He built a mosque then known as the Mosque of Quba.

Some facts about the Quba’ Mosque are:

  1. It is the first mosque built after the Prophet migrated. As mentioned in the Holy Quran Surah At-Taubah 9:108, “Verily, the mosque whose foundation was laid from the first day on piety is more worthy that you stand therein (to pray).”
  2. Quba’ Mosque is the first place where the Prophet (SAW) praying in congregation openly. The Prophet (SAW) was directly involved in building the Mosque of Quba. It is mentioned that Ash Shamus bint An-Nu’man said that she saw the Prophet (SAW) when he came and was developing Quba’ Mosque, and she saw him bringing stones and she could see the white dust on his stomach. Then came a man among his Companions who said to him: “May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah, give it to me and I will be sufficient.” But he replied: “No, take one like it.” He was continuing his work until the mosque was built. Quba’ Mosque used to face Jerusalem then Allah (SWT) ordered praying facing the Ka’bah and it was rebuilt to become the mosque we see now.
  3. The Prophet (SAW) visited the Mosque of Quba in every Saturday. Ibn Umar (RA) said: “The Prophet (SAW) used to come to Quba’ Mosque every Saturday either walking or riding.” (hadith narrated by Bukhari and Muslim).
  4. Prayer at Quba’ Mosque is equal to running the Umrah. Sahl bin Hunayf (RA) says that Rasulullah (SAW) said:  “Whoever went out until he came to this mosque, Quba’ Mosque and prayed therein, it would be equivalent to performing Umrah, i.e. in reward” (Al Mustadrak by Al-Hakim).
