Tips for Choosing of Fresh Meat

Fresh meat is mostly sold openly, without containers or without labels, only in supermarket the meat is sold with package. So consumers are difficult to distinguish which one is Halal and which is not, except to distinguish between beef and pork, because pork is usually sold separately. Unfortunately in some supermarkets, especially in Moslem minority countries, the separation of pork with others is not too strict. Therefore consumers should be careful to choose which supermarket sells halal meat and does not mix with pork. We must avoid buying meat at a place that sells pork although it is placed in a separate space, unless the meat is packed (with halal label) and sold in a separate place. We have to doubt of the handling of the pork that is very difficult to completely separated with other meats (including equipment and room used).

Here are tips on selecting halal fresh meat:

  1. Buy meat with Halal certificate, or in stores that sell halal meat
  2. Buy in supermarkets that do not sell pork because we have to concern of the handling, unless the meat is packed (with halal label) and stored separately with the pork (this is the case for Muslims who live in a country where Muslim is a minority).
  3. If we doubt of its halal status, we should ask the butcher/storekeeper where the meat originated from, who slaughtered the animal (a Muslim or not) and how to slaughter it.
  4. Animal on the market / store that is hanged and sold at a fair price is more secure than that placed in the container, moist, and sold with low prices. The meat in the container and moist probably is inflated by forcing cattle ingest as much water as possible before being slaughtered to increase its weight– beside doubt of its halal status and health.
  5. To know that chicken is butchered correctly is when there are no bluish black spots around the folds of the thighs and wings. If there are spots –that signify the blood do not release perfectly– then the chicken is suspected as chicken carcasses without slaughtering. Usually the price of the chicken carcasses are cheaper and can be identified by observing the existence of patches of blackish brown spots that usually shown in several places on the body of the chicken. Therefore, when buying chicken meat, examine the condition of the chicken. If there are patches of blood on the parts of the body then do not buy.
