Wedding Plans

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad, Shalallahu Alyhi Wassalam has said, “O youthful people, if any of you have the means to, he should get married, as it lowers the eyesight and protects the private parts. Those who have not the ability to do so should fast, as it will be a shield for him.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Islam has made the “marriage” as a means to unite the love between the two kinds of human beings. Expectations of the couple that will be heading to the altar for establishing a happy family should be Sakinah Mawaddah warRahmah, comfort, peace, love, and affection.

Marriage will not be created and sustained without adequate preparations before two Muslims walk through the gates of marriage. Preparation is needed to achieve a desired wedding. The first preparation should be that of morality (spiritual) and the maturity of the Islamic vision. Every bride and groom should desire to be married with a righteous man/woman (sholeh/sholehah).

The next preparation is conceptual, where both individuals understand the concept of marriage. Marriage is an event that adds to the reward of worship and is not just for protecting from lust. Marriage also as a forum for the creation of successors – the Robbani generation and successors in the struggle to uphold the deen, dienullah.

Next is the preparation of the bride’s personality for the acceptance and existence of a leader while she sees herself as the queen of the household. A Muslim woman should understand and be fully aware that she will be living with a completely new person who will immediately be positioned as a leader so that she can be prepared to respect and obey when the husband is upholding and adhering to the tenets of the deen.

Then there is physical preparation which is characterized as the adequate health of our bodies so that both parties will be able to carry out the functions they are responsible for as husband or wife optimally.

A meaningful wedding requires planning and creative input from both partners and any family members and friends you’ve decided to include in the planning. Wedding planning can be a wonderful part of the experience but it can also be very challenging and stressful. Indeed, you can be assured that some plans won’t go as you’d like them to, so plan for that eventuality too.
