What Rasulullah pbuh did in the Month of Sya’ban?

In the name of Allah…

Praise be to Allah who has created the place and time….

And peace be upon Muhammad who observed more fasting in Sya’ban…

And peace be upon to his family, companions, and upon all those who adhered to the glorious Al-Qur’an.

Today  is 13th of June 2013 coincides with 4th of Month of Sya’ban,  which is amongst the sacred months of our Islamic calendar. Moreover, it is the month that we prepare to welcome Ramadhan.

SYA’BAN is a month of excellent that introduces the great Month of Ramadhān. The Prophet (Sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam), used to fast voluntarily during this month more than any other months.

«يا رسول الله! لم ارك تصوم شهرا من الشهور ما تصوم من شعبان؟! قال: ذلك شهر يغفل الناس عنه، بين رجب ورمضان، وهو شهر ترفع فيه الأعمال إلى رب العالمين، فأحب أن يرفع عمل، وأنا صائم»

O Rasulullah (Sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam), I didn’t see, you fasting in any month as I saw you do in Sya’ban? Rasulullah (Sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: That’s a month the people neglect it between Rajab and Ramadan, and in that month- Sya’ban- the people deeds are raised to the Lord of mankind, so I love to be fasting, while my deeds are raised.” (Narrated by Osama bin Zaid radhiallahu ‘anhu- HR.Bukhari).

SYA’BAN is a month that introduces the great Month of Ramadhan. The Prophet (Sallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam), peace be upon him, used to fast voluntarily during this month more than in any other month.Because Sya’ban is between Rajab and Ramadhan, two very important months, paves the way for Ramadhan.  Fasting in Sya’ban is a preparatory fast for Ramadhan. If an individual begins fasting in Sya’ban he or she will have become used to fasting and will feel strong and energetic when Ramadhan comes.

As we have entered the Month of Sya’ban, why not we get closer to Allah Subhanahu wata’ala and improve ourselves as muslimah by doing sunnah fasting such as fasting on Monday and Thursday, ayyamul bidh fasting (3 days in the middle of month) or if we can do Dawood fasting. Sya’ban is an opportunity to prepare ourselves for Ramadhan.

The Prophet (pbuh) used to fast all of Sya’ban. “I never saw the Messenger of Allah, fasting in a month so profusely as he did in the Month of Sya’ban. He used to fast in that month leaving only a few days, rather, he used to fast almost the whole of the month”. (Reported by Aisha Radhiallahu ‘Anha- HR.Bukhari).

«كان أحب الشهور إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أن صومه شعبان ثم يصله برمضان»

She (Aisha) also narrated “Sya’ban is the most beloved month to Allah’s Prophet to fast in it till the beginning of Ramadhan” [Declared Authentic by Al-Albani].

Although Sya’ban is a good month for fasting but it does not mean that we start in Sya’ban with a mounting enthusiasm, but ends up with nothing of it to remain in Ramadhan. It is our responsibility to keep our acts of worship consistent and focus on the priority, which is Ramadhan.

Sahl ibn Sa’d reported that the Prophet (pbuh) said: “There is a gate to Paradise that is called ar-Rayyan. On the Day of Resurrection it will say: ‘Where are those who fasted?’ When the last [one] has passed through the gate, it will be locked.” This is related by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

As Sya’ban paves the way for Ramadhan, so it is good to collect deeds during this month, such as fasting, reciting from the Holy Qur’an, and giving charity, are lifted to up the Most Exalted, Allah. Habeeb ibn Abi Thaabit used to say, when Sya’ban came, “This is the month of reciters (of the Qur’an).”
