Why We Should Choose Organic Food

Many supermarkets now provide organic foods such as organic meat, vegetables, fruits, snacks, rice, milk, and much more. Sometimes we as customers confuse organic foods with conventional food, but as quoted from the Mayoclinic, the word “organic” comes from the way farmers cultivate and handle agricultural products. Organic farming is designed to nurture soil, conserve water, and reduce pollution. Farmers who develop organic products do not apply conventional methods to fertilize and monitor weeds, because they prefer to use natural fertilizers to enrich soil and plants, to apply crop rotation or they use mulch to control weeds.

There are many reasons why we should choose organic foods:

  1. To prevent chemical contamination. Organic foods protect our bodies from chemical intake that is harmful. Conventional products use pesticides, antibiotics, synthetic fertilizers and hormones whereas organic methods of farming do not.
  2. Contains more nutrients. Organic products contain more vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and micronutrients when compared to conventional products. Based on the studies quoted from Prevention, organic foods have 21.1% more iron (than their conventional counterparts); 27% more vitamin C; 29.3% more magnesium; and 13.6% more phosphorus.
  3. Organic foods taste better. Organic foods are more nutritious and provide balanced soil which produces crops that are healthier and stronger, so they taste better than conventional foods.
  4. Kept away from GMO (Generally Modified Organisms), as well as hormones, antibiotics, and drugs that are commonly found in animal products. GMO’s in the crops are used so that produce can survive insects, extreme heat and drought. These are common pesticides that can contaminate meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy products since these foodstuffs are all high up in the food chain.
  5. To maintain ecosystems, to reduce pollution, to protect water and soil. As farmers do not use dangerous drugs or chemical means when producing organic foods, this protects insects, birds, and other animals in the ecosystem. Organic farming also protects water and soil from pollution, so the soil is healthier.

Although some people still think twice before shopping for organic foods or even do not buy organic foods because the prices are expensive, if we notice, in many cases organic foods almost have the same prices as conventionally farmed foods depending on the season. To anticipate high cost and to balance our budget, we may choose vegetables and organic fruits but reduce red meat in our diet. Choose only the organic foods that we really need and which are worth with the money so we can keep our bodies healthy.
